This weekend (21st to 23rd August) sees the Irish Masters Home Nations Plus tournament take place at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club in Hillsborough, the first time Ireland has hosted such a tournament. Five countries are taking part in the Mens Over 40s category: Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, Germany. The Mens Over 50s and Womens Over 40’s are also participating.
This is only the second tournament for the Irish Women (Over 40s) since their inaugural foray in Wales in late June this year. The squad has been strengthened since then, with Debbie Wilson from Randalstown, along with Annie Lawlor from Pembroke, adding nous and skill to the midfield, while the experienced Roly Burke (Hermes) and Noreen ORiordan (Loreto) strengthen the defence. The attack is supplemented by the speed and persistence of Sue Vincent (Loreto) and Emma Meir (Avoca). The squad, captained by Alison
Pigot (Pembroke),faces Wales on Saturday at 3pm, hoping to better their previous 2-2 draw, and will seek to provide stiffer competition against England who they play on Sunday at 11.30am and again in a friendly match on Monday at 10.15am.
All support welcome at Lisnagarvey over the week-end. Further details are available at www.irelandmasters.com.
